At AMS Auto, we’re more than an adaptive driving equipment installer. We’re a family-owned mobility company dedicated to restoring independence, one installation at a time. Located in Woodstock, IL, Alternative Mobility Solutions has been helping people regain independence through professional adaptive equipment installation since 2008.
Founder Olaf Lis moved to the Chicago area from Poland in 1995 at the age of 23. The idea for AMS Auto came years later, after a relative was paralyzed in a serious car accident — an experience that opened his eyes to just how much demand there was for real mobility solutions, and how few businesses were set up to meet it. He started AMS Auto in 2008, intent on getting people back on the road who otherwise would have been stranded at home.
It wasn’t an easy start. 2008 was the year the market collapsed, and building a mobility-focused business through that downturn was, in Olaf’s words, one of the hardest things he’s done. AMS Auto has grown into a full auto repair and auto body shop, with adaptive driving equipment installation as its core focus, work that’s meaningfully different from a routine repair, since it’s about helping someone get back behind the wheel after a serious life event, an injury, or years of rehab.
Unlike large corporate dealers, when you work with AMS Auto, you’re working directly with our family. Every installation, every consultation, and every follow-up call gets our personal attention, because mobility is more than just equipment, it’s freedom, independence, and dignity.

Olaf founded AMS Auto in 2008 after watching a relative’s life change overnight following a serious car accident. That experience showed him how badly the disability community needed real mobility solutions and how few shops were equipped to provide them. Today, he’s hands-on with the business he built, taking personal pride in every customer who drives off with their independence restored.
